-We’ve been sitting here for nearly two hours after ordering the banquet. 3 out of 8 meal items served. The manager is eating and drinking in the corner while his staff flounder with their lack of hospitality experience. Dishes not being cleared, slow service, the need to explain what is happening to them. This is disappointing because these new ambitious ventures should be supported; however Gweilo is best described as shambolic. +Food is great, when it is actually served to you.

Went last Friday for the latin party, but drinks are priced like the ivy club (like $13 for a house spirit) the sound system is not better than the soundbar I have at home and the colour lights are from ebay. Yeh nah, pass.

Well, let me tell you about this "not-so-great" pub. The bouncer there must have attended the School of Grumpiness and earned a degree in Unwelcoming Gestures. I wouldn't send my worst enemy there unless they were absolutely, positively desperate for an adventure in awkwardness!

Was encouraged to try the renewed menu and cook and was not disappointed. Chose the chicken schnitzel. Generous serving portions, fresh and well seasoned/crumbed chicken, fresh and crisp salad and crunchy chips. A big meal that you will struggle to finish but will anyway as it's delicious. Look forward to coming back.

This pub should be your last choice unless someone pays you. I went to this pub after work. This bartender kept skipping me in line until I brought it up. He yelled back, "I'm following the line," as if he was disciplining a child! I matched his rude tone after he got my order wrong a few times, and this dramatic bartender called the security guard to kick me out for being rude! What a joke. Even the security guy seemed surprised, as they had no real reason to remove me. I left without further argument, but the pub's horrible vibe alone was reason enough to leave. I thought security guards were there to ensure safety for customers and workers, not to serve as weapons for incompetent and rude bartenders! They absolutely need to train their bartenders in bar management and etiquette. Don't waste your and your friends' time in this pub. There are many better pubs in Sydney.

The Evening Star Hotel was the kind of pub that literally made me quicken my step on the way to Central. An outward-facing smoking area constantly occupied by rusted on regulars meant it reeked of cigarette smoke. The flashing lights of pokies, only partially dulled by darkened glass, were their ever-present backdrop. So for me, the recent Paul Kelly Design refit, was long overdue. The interior is now a curved, 50s futuristic, minty green, with murals and menu motifs that scream Blader Runner. Weekends are already pumping, I'm told by friendly bar staff, thanks in no small part I'm sure to the venue sitting just outside Sydney’s hated NSW Liberal Government lockout zone. While I’ve visited three times during daylight hours, it’s obvious that the superb wet Asian cityscape mural will look even better in the dark. Weekday lunches are – thus far – a much more subdued affair, despite a Lunch Special ($20) that gives you one of their ‘bigs’ plus a bowl of rice and a house beer or wine for twenty bucks. In case the ‘white ghost’ translation of Gweilo has been lost upon you, what you’ll be eating is a blend of Western techniques and flavours mixed in with pan-Asian cuisine – as you'd find on the ground in Hong Kong. In some cases – like the Wagyu Beef Shin, Carrot and Tooheys New Rendang ($25) - this fusion is remarkably successful. While the dish looks small, when you start eating it you’ll find it contains a generous amount of very well-handled beef shin in a rich, but not thick, beer-based rendang gravy. Being a bit sick of sous vide beef cheeks masquerading as curries but tasting solely of beef, I was pleased to find the shin showed deep flavour penetration from a 10-hour cook in rendang base stock. Well-rendered connective tissue was luxurious in my mouth, and the bold, mouth-tingling heat was fantastic. In other dishes, like the Singapore Chilli Prawn, Egg Noodle, Poor Man’s Parmesan ($30), the fusion was less successful. The dish's aesthetic felt more like Americanised red sauce Italian, with soft tinned spaghetti lost in too much tomato sauce. Restrained chilli and crisped up breadcrumbs didn’t help, though it did also contain five gently-cooked, good quality king prawns. I smashed out my lunch specials with their on-tap beer range, which runs from Kosciuszko to Furphy Refreshing Ale. The latter is by Little Creatures (owned by Lion Nathan/Kirin) and named for the company that supplied their stainless tanks & fermenters, Furphy Engineering. It's hazy, amber, with a tiny hint of bitterness, gentle hops and subdued fruit. It was a bit bland even for my pale ale palate, so I found myself preferring the pale and refreshing Gweilo branded beer. From the 'smalls' I loved the punchy XO hit from the Smoked Pumpkin and Corn Dumplings ($12/4) topped with lots of green for us gweilo eaters who like seeing something resembling a balanced meal in every dish. Round them out with a 'KFC' Bao ($6/each) with kombu fried chook, pickled cucumber and lashings of Bulldog sauce, and you have the kind of midweek lunch that begs for a cheeky cocktail. The Hotto Pineapple ($22) is my go-to from the nicely inventive list. It teams chilli-infused Plantation Pineapple Rum, Green Chartreuse and Ardbeg 10 into a wickedly fruity mix that doesn't lose the whisky. It's kicked up even further with a spicy Togarashi rim that might mean you'll get an extra vegetable as you cool your mouth with cucumber slices.

Stumbled upon this bar during the heatwave yesterday for somewhere to cool off with a drink and grab a late lunch. The ladies behind the bar were incredibly friendly and the burger & fries tasted delicious! The venue was quiet but comfortable. I’ll be sure to visit again!

Service was excellent. Friendly and approachable. Food was solid. Chicken salad was nice, without being spectacular. Ambiance at a decent level, not so loud you can't think, but you could still hear the music.

One of the night managers there is da bomb. Such a gentleman and very accommodating. Feel that the pub can be a bit rasist tho as I've had Aboriginal friends of mine turned away by security for no reason. No drinks prior to going down there. One had never been there before but still they are turned away and I am waved through....bogus!!

Not been here before so it was good to find a clean, bright venue to have a couple of drinks and some decent snacks after work. The Asian influenced snacks are delicious and a good size to go with drinks. Food was brought out quickly with friendly service from the servers. I found a good selection of drinks from beers to cocktails and the bar tender Ben knew what he was doing when it came to my whiskey. Will definitely be back soon.

Great place with very honest and trustworthy stuff. I left my wallet there full of cash and did not know until the lady who works there ran after me to give it back which had all of my money and cards in it still inside. I am ever so grateful. Thank you.

Good food, good price. Had steak on Monday, it’s only $15 including beer. You can ask orange juice or coke instead of alcohol. They have different menu $15 every day. Have been here many time and definitely will come back again. Recommended

Amazing customer service, the chicken looked pink but it was actually cooked properly and even though the food was really good they still refunded us for the meal. Very great service bar is very relaxing place to have a meal or a drink with your friends where you don't have to shout. Took feedback like a champ. Thank you for your lovely service.

Amazing customer service but the air conditioning in that place is really bad there’s no air on Saturday evenings and it’s actually really bad and people can pass out in this heat! They need to use the air ons when there is an event on. I almost don’t want to go because the heat is unbearable in there but we love the venue on Saturdays.
