We went to the Matara Hotel for Dinner for my birthday last month, the food was great the service was outstanding. We loved it that much we went back last night for my wife’s birthday and once again cannot fault the food. The staff went out of their way for us once again, they all need pay rises.
Thank you to all the staff at Mattara for your great hospitality.

Went here for lunch, and experienced great food, friendly and helpful staff and a relaxing atmosphere, especially when sitting in the booth by the fish tank ( a favorite spot)🙂👍🏻

We had the scotch fillet dinner, for the price I feel you need to source a bit quality meat, ours was very grizzly. Everything else was good, the service, the renovated pub, the atmosphere.

We both had scotch fillet steak. Steak was amazing however the sources were less than desirable. 👎 Chips we ok but salad wasn’t great either. Atmosphere and service was 10/10 but.

The bartender Amelia Thompson is an absolute legend. She had the best service I have ever experienced (and I've worked in hospo myself). She remembered my order and was bringing the energy EVERY time I asked for a drink.
Matt the security guard was an absolute legend and very helpful as well. Side note, funny fella

Some of the worst staff, went in at 9 o’clock and got 2 beers the male bar tender took me and my girlfriends ids with a small crack on both the guy serving us ask why they had cracks about to not let us order until I pulled service nsw up he finally let me have my drinks it was pretty quiet until we left. Then he kept staring at us while leaving, He the came up to me and asked if I had taken anything I was confused I had one drink he then followed us out and watched us walk down the road.
Do not recommend to anyone was the worst bar experience iv had since being 18

Relaxed atmosphere, but my $25 schnitzel was dry & crunchy, my friends steak sandwich was tough

Our family (14), ages 95 to 8, had the absolute pleasure of dining here on Christmas Day 2023.
WHAT A DELIGHTFUL experience.
Every single dish, all served to our table, and there were many, including assorted breads, antipasto, prawns, oysters, salads X 3, hot meats X 4, grilled salmon, assorted vegetables and assorted desserts, with all the trimmings.
Every mouthful was on point.
The staff were vibrant, friendly and extremely accommodating!!
Table setting was beautiful and the ambience very Christmassy.
Our family has discussed our experience at length and definitely award a 10/10!!

Nice pub, friendly atmosphere and staff. Had the waffle chicken burger, was really big and nice. Would recommend stopping by.

Meal was pretty delicious apart from the very poor quality chips that tasted like it was deep fried in two week old oil. Customer service was lovely though I wouldn’t rush back to this pub.

Just the dining side for now just look at the Decor. No pub has to do this but they do and thankfully the only pub in Charlestown does it in style

I’ve been visiting this pub for aprox 10 years now seen many changes in staff/ management ect.
I’ve observed a trend / culture of staff taking ownership and disrespecting customers for their own ego.
Over the last 12 months in particular I’ve seen this become more and more prominent.
Not sure if management change or just lazyness/… nobody checking on these people put in management position's that seem to be feeling a little to untouchable
In my opinion,
this venue is no longer a comfortable environment for most customers instead it’s become a place for staff to enjoy a pay check whilst disregarding rules and customers alike .
I intend to continually maintain the ideology that this is a place for the people / community to enjoy and not a place for egos to run rampant.
I’ll do my best to continue monitoring this situation,
Along with communicating with ALH group I hope to see this venue becoming a place to enjoy for all once again.
( tonight my experience consisted of poor staff attitude followed by a assistant manager I believe he chanted his title was to me,
Whilst disregarding diplomatic questions eg.and I quote.
1.Am I kicked out do you want me to leave?
… after not answering and instead staying mute with blank face or answering with random questions of intent to accuse me of abuse based on the fact I’m clearly out numbered in opinion and hierarchy whilst in the venue.
Allows me to walk towards different area at which time decides to rush out and intercept me in an aggressive manner.
Using his hand in my face and not responding to any diplomatic questions such as
1. Can I get my bike ?
2. Will you get it ? Ect .
Instead just chanting in my face until he was able to calm himself enough to release what I’m saying … "ok I’m leaving I need to get bike then go" … possibly out of embarrassment he then felt the need to yell and berate me whilst I did retrieve my bike and leave in front of people in my community

Since posting this review I have received calls from mattara directly (assistant manager) further fabricating accusations and also threats.
On top of this also recieving calls from unknown numbers some incoherent however last call made it clear that someone is not happy about me giving honest review .
This behaviour is beyond appalling from a venue of such nature.

I have had a few one night stays in Charles town, Newcastle this last year. Tonight I visited Mattara hotel for an early dinner.
A great location with view across the tropical hills, floors on varied levels.
Plenty of car parks, staff were exceptional with customer service. I grabbed a large glass of Giesen Sav Blanc $12 & had a wonder. Dinner meals started from 5pm, bistro bar still open to purchase drinks with ample room to relax. Front bar had rows & rows of table & chairs. I think the out lay could be a little less uniform. Amazing TAB screen with all your sports & many of them. Attentive staff great service. Gaming room too but did not venture in there tonight.
I was welcomed to plugging in & charging my phone while waiting for my dinner.
Meal amendments were met with a no fuss attitude. I ordered the Salmon & asked for Salad & a bowl of mash potato as it is a seperate side. This was not an issue at all. Potato was to die for!! 🤤 salmon over cooked but I won’t mind well done salmon.
Great dinner & service, I shall be back again for my next visit in March.
If you have kids you are headed to the right place, a cool mini open basement area with play equipment & a heap of mechanical games are there for amusement.
I almost forgot they do the table dial ordering that I am now quite accustomed to in my visits to all states.

Have been there several times. Foods are fine most of the time. Tables are not wiped in time. It takes forever to serve the meal.

Great staff, fabulous food. Best vegan tacos I’ve ever had. Huge serve!! Loved it!

Great option instead of going to the food court for lunch. We wandered over from the shopping centre and were so glad we did. We ordered schnitzels and they were served to us within 10 mins. The schnitzels were great and decent sized portions. We saw they were on the $15 lunch specials Monday to Friday and that’s an absolute bargain for a sit down lunch these days. Atmosphere inside is nice. A lot of pubs have that stale vibe but this didn’t. Had a fire going and a nice view outside. Staff were also super friendly and made us feel welcome.

Food was awesome the two scotch fillets rare and medium rare were perfect! Burrito bowl and half arrack of ribs were great also.
I have to say though.. i booked online. For table of 4. Arrived at 5.45pm for 6pm booking, very quite, we were placed at a table near the kitchen, we decided to move a bit further away, I was going to hail the waitress down to advise her but she was flat out at the bar so we grabbed our table reservation and moved to an unreserved table. A few moments later the waitress came over and abruptly advised us 'if we are going to move to let her know' we apologised and all was well. I understand, this can be a frustrating part of her job. It wasn't busy at all, but whatever...
I would definitely eat here again though it's a good feed.

Food was awesome as always. I have been here at least 100 times. The customer service this time was horrible specially the waitress who served us. When i asked for cutlery she was so rude and showed me where they were. They used to offer cutleries to the table with extra plates.
The food was delicious. Chicken buffallo wings and grilled salmon are always food to try here at mattara plus a scooner of stone & wood: you won’t be disappointed 😄
When we were done with food, she had some wired expression too🥲
The other staffs we usually meet does provide exceptional service but she was not meant to be working for food and service industry. I hope the management provides some good customer service training to her. I know her name *****e but it is not appropriate mentioning here so that she gets some room for improvement and provide a good service to other customers.

Food was a good change from the last time we ate here. Beef cheeks were really well seasoned and soft, with a really nice gravy. All round good place to catch up for lunch.

Dropped in for a quick lunch. Wasn't disappointed. $15 lunch menu also with a chefs menu or regular menu lots to choose from. Reasonable prices and sizes of meals. Barra chips and Salad tasting more like whiting but very enjoyable for any lover of fish. Salads fresh with just the right amount of dressing. Schnitzel very big, so I had to get a take away. Prepare to be full when you leave.

Clean, welcoming bistro environment with the choice of table or booth setting. Having ordered a steak sandwich with chips - steak was more a 'steakette', the chips were hot and crispy. Staff were friendly and professional. The 60s fish tank is dated and needs to go.

Christmas Lunch 2020

Been going here sporadically for years. Always a great feed! The chefs don't skimp on Schnitzel toppings.
