What a positive turn around! We've visited several times now and the meals have all been great! Large servings and rhe food has been fresh. I love the idea of half serve adult meals for those of us not wanting a full size meal. Well done Paynesville Hotel.

We enjoyed dinner Saturday night in the bar.
What a massive change this pub has undertaken!
Gone are the drunken barflies and grumpy staff!
Great pub food, great service and great vibe!

Visited the pub again in 2023 on Wednesday which is steak night Porterhouse $25 + $2 pepper sauce rare.
It was excellent. A really good rare steak. Followed by an excellent New York cheese cake that was much better than many deserts in fancy restaurants.
This is a working type pub. Not a flash one. But it has nice water views and nice staff. Not fancy but worth visiting.
3 years agoGood value pub. Monday's have $20 parmi or an excellent scotch fillet. The Pub has improved significantly. Will go again

Top notch pub food that is satisfying and filling. Huge really delicious serves that arrive promptly. Book ahead, even in winter. This is a popular local pub eatery.

The grilled snapper was the size of a gold fish for $32 and we waited 1 hour and 10 mins for our meal. We were a party of five and each meal came out at different times so we couldn’t enjoy eating together.
I’ve been in the hospitality industry for 30+ years and have never experienced anything like it.
Others from my table had scotch fillet and Parma and they were big servings.

Service was amazing and atmosphere was amazing and you can get food from next and eat it in here. Bar staff was amazing

Sat in sterile barn-size dining room out back of pub. No art work or other attempt at ambience. Dinners were large and tasty,great home made chips accompanying parma and calamari. Summary - good for if you're just after a basic meal. Disappointing in terms of overall dining experience.

Quick and fast service super fun for the kids with a few games at the back to try their luck. The bar and drinks were fantastic, the meals were not that great but edible they must have been super busy as I can imagine meals would be a lot nicer when not rushed.

Ordered the fish and chips, honestly can say it is the best flake I’ve ever had. Melts in your mouth and the fillets are thick. Definitely recommend if you’re dining in. Service is also good, they regularly check in on how you’re going

It’s like a family running bistro .
The food was okay.
The seafood plater is good to share with 2 people. I love the fish and scallops. We got a roast of the day which is lamp and the lamb which I think it’s really good.
It’s suitable for several friends to chat and drink some 🍻
The sunsets was beautiful.

Great gummy shark meal. More than enough. Table was a bit sticky though. Needed a wipe down. Would definitely go back again.

Great dinner at Paynesville Hotel. Service was good & dinner arrived quickly. Two of us had Parmas - very nice. 1 had Snapper - good except mash potato was cold. Definitely worth a visit when your in town.

Fresh, clean, awesome service and fantastic food. We shared the oysters ‘to die for’ and I had the snapper which was amazing. Beautifully cooked fresh greens, best chips and the lemon Parmesan crust on the fish was unbelievable. Best pub food I’ve had in a long time - we will be back! 😋

First meal here under the new owners, and it didn’t disappoint. Friendly service and newly refurbished spaces. As a coeliac, staff were patient with me when discussing meal options and checking with kitchen staff to confirm what could be done to accomodate. Highly recommend if you’re in East Gippsland! ⭐️

Finally, new owners' new direction and this place is on the improve. Now, there are still areas to improve, but great start. Scallops well over priced for what you get ok flavours but trying to create something that doesn't reflect there business. Keep it simple. Prawn Spaghetti, winner everyone will have different taste but thought it was good question fresh prawns but was good.
Chicken Parma, still not hitting mark, clearly prepared early in day for flash fry and grill and thrrfore lacks taste. be brave go local and fresh the balance not quite there on a pub classic. Kids meals went well .
Overall its not a out of the park but this is a team that just started working together after refreshing the place and new owners stepping in. 1000 times better then 6 months ago great simple menu just needing to get balance right and please improve the steak visual that was the let down the presentation of the streak and taste, local yes but didn't reflect price. Worse thing was salad dressing so really can't complain because we didn't go there for the salad. Overall family enjoyed the night.

Dinner for our work weekend away on 20/3/2021 Totally disappointed with the price of the seafood plate $45.00. Not worth the $$$. Steak was cheaper. I mean a lousy small piece of fish. Also bar staff rude when a comment was made to a colleague stating its not rocket science as to whether she wanted a half or full glass of wine.

As a local I have seen many incarnations of the Old Pub. I would say that I’ve never had a good experience there but each time there are new owners I have given it a try. I have put off tonight’s visit with the latest owners for some time but a family member convinced me to give them a go. There was an extremely long wait for the entrees to appear but given that it’s a long weekend we were understanding. We ordered prawn spaghetti, pork chop, 2 parma’s 2 full size gummy’s and 1 half size gummy as mains. The spaghetti was well presented and contained a substantial amount of prawns. The pork chop was large but as tough as an old boot. The parma’s were well presented but very small and we believed they may have been half serves as this is offered on the menu but we ordered full size. We received only one full size gummy , the other full size serve only had 1 fillet where the other full size had 2 and when this was mentioned to the waitstaff we were told it was full size. The waitstaff all looked harassed and miserable. Even though it was a long weekend the bistro was far from full. I believe the new owners have been there long enough to have ironed out any teething issues but in my opinion, they still have a long way to go. I’m afraid I won’t be visiting the Old Pub until it changes hands once more after tonight’s experience.

Amazing meals!!! Visiting from Melbourne and I wish more places in Melbourne had meals this good. The portions were decent and the price reasonable. Great outdoor area. Would eat here again in a heartbeat.

Always have a great meal here. The vinaigrette on the salad is exceptional 👌
Love that we can sit outside in the fenced-in garden with our little dog.
