Wow, wow, wow, NEVER had such rude food service. My rump steak that after having to yell back and forth to order at the very loud front bar, was massively overcooked. Ordered medium rare, so should be essentially pink through out, except outermost edge, with blood, juices, present. Outside 1cm Gray, cooked through, and would generally suggest at least medium well if not technically well done. Politely complained it was very over cooked. Server returned stating it had a pink middle section so medium rare. Statedif that was medium rare, I was a water buffalo. He took offense, told us to take a refund and LEAVE. Sorry staying here. NEVER HAD SUCH AN EXPERIENCE

We stayed here for 2 x nights on the way to Sydney. Lovely old pub with good rooms. We had a room with a terrace and it was clean with good WiFi and air con. The terrace was a bit grubby though and could do with a good scrub. Nice and quiet. ||We ate both nights in the hotel and the food was fabulous and the beer prices on happy hour were good to. ||There is no parking at the hotel but if there is free street parking if you are there are at the weekend or after 5pm. There is also free street parking in Watt Street past the police station all year round if you don't mind not being able to see your car. We left it there for the 2 x nights and it was fine. ||Hotel is withing walking distance to the lovely beach and there are a couple of nice cafes there that do good breakfasts. All in all a good stay and would recommend.

We organised a school reunion in the restaurant at The Grand. Great hospitality manager assisted with planning. Food was excellent. Came out together hot and everyone was very happy. Thank you for making our night a fabulous memory.

Went to have a meal tonight, sat down at a table, that did not have a reserved sign. Then a gentleman said he had reserved it, I said that there was as no sign or we would not have sat at the table. Then the manager that works there said I put a sign there, well he obviously DIDNT or we would not have sat at the table, insinuating that we moved the reserve sign, He then said you cant sit there and move. So rude!!!!!😡😡😡😡 Then ordered a lamb salad, which looked like someone had vomited on the plate with a few kale leaves, Disgusting. Will never go to this venue again. Beyond Poor.!!!!😡😡😡😡

We love the grand! The rooms are huge and well... Grand! The dinner menu at the pub downstairs was a 12/10, I think thats what impressed us the most, utterly well executed. And the underground bar was a perfect way to finish the night off. We didn't end up leaving the whole venue while we were there, we had everything we needed under the one roof. Highly recommend!

We had a school reunion at The Grand Hotel. Hospitality manager was flexible and approachable. Drinks first, followed by meals for 25. All meals were great, lots of compliments, all came out together and were hot. Great job staff at The Grand.

We enjoyed our stay, had 2 different nice generous rooms in a traditional pub. In the bigger one you couldn't open the windows (I like fresh air at night) but it was a hot air con night anyway, so all good. Parking requires a bit of smartness, if you don't want to pay meters look up the hill. The Grand is only two blocks from the beach and one block from two very good coffee places plus plenty of restaurants. Nice draft beers downstairs.

The hotel is 300 meters away from the beach. The place is historical and is quiet. The inside is looking like the original 1800s. I highly recommend this hotel as you can do self check in and the staff are friendly over the phone and at the counter. We arrived past midnight and had good sleep because the bed and pillows are very good. There is a nice pub and a restaurant and both look lovely . I would suggest they provide a soap and shampoo holder in the shower, though and 1 chair for the desk.

The Grand is an old style pub with deep polished wood everywhere and obviously very special back in the day. Serves excellent food and beer. Staff are friendly and helpful.in a safe location opposite the police and courthouse. Old style room is small but clean.

Perfect location walking distance to Newcastle Beach and the Newcastle Ocean Baths! Room and bathroom feel dated but you get what you pay for. Friendly staff who were helpful upon arrival.

Our family stayed at The Grand Hotel for two nights in April 2024, booking the family room. As a regular Grand patron when I lived in the city 20-odd years ago, it was the first time for my wife and daughter to visit and we were very excited. Unfortunately its accommodation standards are just, well, shocking. Our room was in total disrepair and frankly uninhabitable: the carpet was filthy, the kettle had a thick layer of grime inside it, the bathroom had an awful odour that meant we had to keep the doors closed throughout to avoid it seeping into the bedrooms. The room wasn't cleaned, which meant we had to empty our bin and request clean towels. There were cobwebs in each of the windows and, worst of all, multiple cockroaches - some alive, some dead - in the living area and bedrooms. Needless to say, it put a dampener on what I had hoped would be a joyful return to a pub and city that holds so much nostalgia and fond memories. On the positive side, the bar staff were friendly and the location is excellent. It's just a tremendous shame that the standard of accommodation is so poor and unhygienic. I hope management can bring it up to the standard befitting the hotel. 'Grand' by name, not by nature.

Old world original 1890s hotel. Nice to stay. Room 7 on my second night was the biggest and best. The disappointment was the cleanliness. Nothing a good wipe down to cure. The beautiful banister was sticky to the hand. Also being told to take your drink to your room at 9.45pm as bar was closing didn't feel welcoming.

Not Great in any aspect. There is no onsite parking. We arrived before 7pm and were given our room key and instructions from a very helpful lady behind the bar, thank you. |We had a meal in the bistro and it was average at best - poorly cooked pork sausages seemed to have barely touched the pan! RSA seemed to be not adhered to as a very rowdy bunch of blokes was continually served beer. |Next was the room. We had room 18 and it was very small, old and tired with windows that did not even open. Please see picture of screens on window that had been WRITTEN ON IN DUST a YEAR AGO! surely a cleaner has opened the shutters at some stage in 12 months? Unacceptable.

No parking at venue. Check in at bar was friendly and efficient. Dinner in restaurant was well below par and table was sticky and felt very unclean. My meal of pork sausages was well undercooked. Bar continued to serve very drunk patrons. Nat staff were the highlight though, very friendly. Room 18 is dreadful. Very small, no opening windows and funky smell. Image attached of screens on window with message written in dust from 12 MONTGS AGO!! Noisy air con or something outside window.

Nine ladies had a lovely lunch at The Grand. Jac(inta) was working on her own but took the time to call me to ask if my friend needed a ramp put at the steps so she could enter on her mobility scooter. All nine meals were delicious and served at the same time. Love the restored decor of the old pub. Have been before, will go again.

I stayed in room 18, and there was an engine running outside the window going into the night. It was very invasive. They really shouldn't rent out his room as It is difficult to sleep.

Great location, specious rooms . The beds and towels were clean and plenty. Iron, hair drier, and toiletries were available. Small fridge and microwave were in the room and enough glasses and cups. The hotel had super old carpet and very dirty, no lock on bathroom doors, no lift. The dishes were not clean enough. You should try the underground bar. So cool

Great location close to the beach. Excellent food. Lovely staff. Reasonable prices. Our hotel room was a disappointment. There is no lift and no one to help with taking luggage upstairs. The shower had scum on it. One of the lights didn't work. The bathroom door kept jamming.

Fabulous hotel, classic pub accommodation in grand style. Clean comfortable rooms, quiet location close to transport, beach, restaurants. Excellent food and very friendly staff. Bathroom very functional and wine glasses in the fridge was a nice touch. The original building, architecture, grand timber staircases etc. are impressive and well maintained.

Can't fault it. Stayed for three nights, manager was helpful, staff were great, prices were unexpectedly affordable and the location...beach, downtown and the best cocktail bar in Newcastle, "Underground", underground. We'll be back.
